This flat rice bowl is part of Hakusan Porcelain's long-running hira chawan series, made in Japan at the Hasami ware kilns. The series received the Good Design Award (G-Mark) in 1993 and the Long Life Design Award in 2004.
The series includes more than 100 pattern variations, with designs on both the inside and outside of the bowl, giving each piece a different look depending on which side is showing.
This bowl measures 15 x 15 cm (5.9 x 5.9 in) and stands 5.5 cm (2.2 in) tall, weighing 230 g (8.1 oz). It is wider and flatter than a typical rice bowl, which also makes it easier to stack for storage. It is easy to hold and works well as a small bowl for side dishes or simmered foods, and also as a dessert or fruit bowl.
