This plate is from Hakusan Porcelain's Asa no Ito (Hemp Thread) series, made in the Hasami-yaki tradition of Nagasaki, Japan. Fine engraved lines run across the surface, and each color is carefully dyed by hand, giving the pattern a delicate texture that harmonizes with the white porcelain base.
This Small size plate, in the Sepia colorway, is sized for use as a side plate, and its all-purpose look suits Japanese, Western, and Chinese dishes alike, so it is convenient to keep several on hand. The rim carries a delicate design while the rest stays a clean white porcelain, which shows food off well, and a slight curve at the edge lets it hold a little sauce or liquid. The simple design does not go out of style, and the plates stack well for easy storage.
