This rice bowl is part of Hakusan Porcelain's popular hiracha-wan (flat rice bowl) series, made in Hasami, Japan. The series was selected for the Good Design Award in 1993 and received the Long Life Design Award in 2004, and it is offered in more than 100 pattern variations across the inside and outside of each bowl.
It is wider and flatter than a standard rice bowl, measuring 15 cm (5.9 in) across and 5.5 cm (2.2 in) in height, and weighing 230 g (8.1 oz). The flatter profile lets the bowls stack neatly for storage, and the shape is comfortable to hold.
Beyond rice, it also works well as a small bowl for side dishes, simmered foods, dessert, or fruit.
