These Kumea pentagonal chopsticks from Hyozaemon have a five-sided shape designed to rest comfortably against the fingers, making them easy to hold. Because of a Japanese play on words, pentagonal chopsticks are also given as a congratulatory gift for passing an exam, known as gokaku-bashi.
Kumea is an uncommon material for chopsticks, but it has a density and weight similar to ebony or rosewood, with a straight, even grain. This pair measures 22 cm (8.7 in) long.
The tip is coated with natural lacquer, and Hyozaemon offers relacquering and repair service so the chopsticks can be used for many years. Made in Japan.
