This katsuobushi shaving box from Nagao is a traditional Japanese tool for shaving whole blocks of dried bonito into fresh flakes. A plane-style blade is set into the lid, and the shavings fall directly into the drawer below as the block is run back and forth across it, keeping the flakes contained and ready for dashi stock, miso soup, or as a topping for rice and vegetables.
The box measures 24 x 9.5 x 11 cm (9.4 x 3.7 x 4.3 in) and weighs about 1200 g (42.3 oz / 2.65 lb). The body is made of sen wood with an oak plane base and a carbon tool steel blade, finished with an oil stain and lacquer coating. It is made in Sanjo, Niigata, Japan.
