This D-shaped (kamaboko-style) cutting board is made from Tono hinoki, cypress from the Urakiso region, one of Japan's three major hinoki-producing areas. It is light and thin, making it easy to pick up and use, and it is built only from straight-grain (masame) wood joined together rather than cut from a single piece, which helps it resist warping while keeping an attractive grain pattern.
Before first use, wet both sides evenly with water. After use, rinse with water or hot water and dry it in the shade; it should not be used in a dish dryer or microwave, and should not be soaked for long periods or soak-cleaned, as this can cause darkening or cracking.
Because it is natural wood, some warping or cracking may occur over time, and hinoki oil or resin may appear on the surface; both are natural and harmless. It measures 39 x 29 x 2 cm (15.4 x 11.4 x 0.8 in) and weighs 700 g (24.7 oz).
