These are replacement parts for a traditional square sawara wood steamer (kakuseiro), the type of wooden steamer basket long used in Japanese kitchens. Both the lid and the trivet are made from sawara cypress, a lightweight wood traditionally chosen for Japanese steaming equipment.
The slanted lid sits on top of the steamer basket and lets condensation run down the sides instead of dripping back onto the food while steaming. The trivet sits inside the basket and raises food above the water level so steam can circulate evenly underneath as it cooks.
Because sawara is a natural material, slight differences in color, grain, and surface texture can occur from piece to piece. These variations are a normal result of using natural wood and do not affect the quality or performance of either part.
This listing offers the slanted lid and the trivet separately, each in a range of sizes to fit square sawara wood steamers from 1-Shaku up to 1-Shaku 5-Sun.
