This is an Edo style ohitsu (Edo-bitsu), a traditional Japanese wooden container for holding cooked rice. It is made from sawara cypress grown in Kiso and bound with copper hoops.

This 21 cm (8.3 in) size holds about 5 go (5 Japanese rice cups) of cooked rice, enough for about 3 to 6 servings and well suited to family use.

The wood is left unfinished. It is made in Japan.
