This small cast iron ball is a piece of Nambu ironware from Ikenaga Tekko, made in Japan. Simply place it in a pot or kettle of water and bring it to a boil to release iron into the water, an easy way to add iron that can otherwise be hard to get enough of.
It is also useful in the kitchen for adding color to pickles and for giving black beans a glossy sheen when they are simmered.
