Toyo-Sasaki Glass Yachiyo Kiln Edo Glass Cold Sake Cup

This cold sake cup is handcrafted at the Yachiyo Kiln, known for Edo glass made in the Yachiyo area of Chiba, a region once known as Shimousa Province. An artisan wraps thin colored glass rods and gold leaf around clear glass, then shapes the cup by mouth-blowing it, giving it a glossy finish.

The cup shows the deep color and gold leaf typical of this glassware, with the warmth of a handmade piece that many owners say they grow fonder of over time. It measures 5.6 x 5.6 x 4.5 cm (2.2 x 2.2 x 1.8 in), weighs 70 g (2.5 oz), and holds 65 ml (2.2 fl oz).

The Yachiyo Kiln continues the techniques of Edo glass, a traditional craft designated by Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.
