Shimizu Mokuzai Ohitsu Sawara Wood Rice Container with Flat Lid 36cm 30 Cups

This is an ohitsu, a traditional Japanese wooden container for holding cooked rice, with a flat lid that rests on top. It is made in Japan from sawara cypress grown in the Kiso region and bound with copper hoops.

This is the 36 cm (14.2 in) size, known in Japan as 1 shaku 2 sun. It is a commercial size that holds about 3 sho (30 go rice cups) of rice, enough for about 20 to 40 people. The wood is left unfinished.
