This drop lid, or otoshibuta, from Tiger Crown is shaped like an umbrella and is made of silicone rubber. It is designed to sit directly on simmered fish or other stewed dishes, helping the ingredients cook evenly.
Besides its use as a drop lid, it can also serve as a lid for storing food, as a pot holder, or as a grip to help open a lid that is stuck. Pressing the center creates a near-vacuum seal.
The lid is about 20 cm (7.9 in) across and about 24 mm (0.9 in) thick, and weighs about 70 grams (2.5 oz / 0.15 lb).
