This is a classic Japanese rice paddle (shamoji) made of hinoki cypress by Shimizu Mokuzai. It is used for serving rice into bowls and for mixing rice.

This is the smallest size in the series, measuring 16 x 5 x 0.8 cm (6.3 x 2 x 0.3 in). Its compact size suits serving individual portions at the table.

The paddle is left as natural unfinished wood, showing the light color and grain of hinoki. A simple, traditional kitchen tool made in Japan.
