This is a classic Japanese rice paddle (shamoji) made of hinoki cypress by Shimizu Mokuzai. It is used for serving rice and for mixing rice.

The paddle is 35 cm (13.8 in) long, with overall dimensions of 35 x 10 x 1 cm (13.8 x 3.9 x 0.4 in). Its long handle gives good reach when mixing larger quantities of rice.

It is left as natural unfinished wood, showing the light color and grain of hinoki. A simple, traditional kitchen tool made in Japan.
