Koyanagi Marusan Katsuobushi Shaver Box Ouza Bonito Flake Plane 01003

This katsuobushi (dried bonito) shaver box comes from Koyanagi Sangyo, a company in Tsubame-Sanjo, Niigata, and each box is handmade one at a time in Sanjo, a town known for its blade-making.

The box has a built-in drawer that conveniently collects the bonito flakes as they are shaved. The outer box is made of tsuga (hemlock) wood, and the plane base is made of oak (nara) wood. The plane blade is SK carbon tool steel, valued for its hardness and wear resistance, which also gives it a firm, sturdy feel in use.

Because the box is made of natural wood, the grain and color can vary slightly from piece to piece. It measures about 24 x 10 x 9.7 cm (9.4 x 3.9 x 3.8 in) and weighs about 780 g (27.5 oz / 1.72 lb). Avoid washing it with water, as this can damage it; please follow the included care instructions. Made in Japan.
