This sake cup is part of the Yachiyo kiln's Edo glass work, made in the historic Shimousa region of Japan. A craftsman wraps thin rods of colored glass and gold leaf around clear glass, then shapes the piece by blowing it by hand, giving it a glossy, refined finish.

The cup shows a deep, rich color together with the luxurious look of gold leaf, and carries the warmth of a handmade piece that becomes more appealing the more it is used. The glassmaking method follows Edo glass techniques recognized as a national traditional craft, designated by Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.
